Sometimes social media gets me down. Apart from feelings of not being able to keep up, there is the seemingly never ending changes to privacy policies that really keep you on your toes and make you wonder why you just don’t hit DEACTIVATE on all your accounts.
If you haven’t already heard, On December 17th Instagram made the following proposed changes to their privacy policy which would take effect on January 16th. In short the legalese said that while you owned the photos they had unlimited access to sell them. If you didn’t like the proposed changes you were told to deactivate your account by January 16th.
Almost immediately, tips and instructions on how to download your photos and deactivate your account began circulating. I spent most of the afternoon thinking about WHEN I would deactivate my Instagram account. However, after much outrage by their users, Instagram tweaked their privacy policy to limit photo use in ads.
While I think that is great, I have to admit that I’m now starting to feel ambivalent about my Instagram account. Especially because Instagram is now owned by Facebook and there is talk of autoplay video ads coming to Facebook.
When that happens, I’m deleting my account. How about you?
