Fall Accessories: The Statement Necklace

Fashion is for everyone, no matter the size of your budget.  So never let your budget discourage you from trying new trends or punching up your wardrobe.  You’ll be surprised how much better you will feel when you take the time to pull yourself together, instead of throwing on the nearest pile of sweatpants or yoga pants.

Accessories are the easiest way to update your existing wardrobe.  Right now statement necklaces are the hot “must have” accessory. After evaluating my wardrobe last year I decided that the area that I was most lacking in was accessories. They are the finishing touches on your wardrobe, like icing on a cake…and I was leaving them off.  So this season, instead of loading up on new clothes, I’m focusing on accessories.

Bib Necklaces: The ultimate Statement Necklace

I recently found this necklace from Kate Spade on the Neiman Marcus website

Kate Spade Athenee Bib Necklace $298

As well as this one from Arden B (via Stylish Housewife)

Faceted Stone Collar Necklace $38

…and this variation, the Ebony Mesh Collar,  from Baubble Bar

Ebony Mesh Collar $28

Which do you prefer?  Have you tried out a statement necklace for the fall?

Things happen in Los Angeles

Something happens to me when I return to Los Angeles.  Of course I’m excited.  I’m excited to reconnect with friends I haven’t seen  in a year ( or sometimes more)I’m excited to have no real responsibilities outside of feeding myself and showing up where I promised I would.

I can sleep inI can read.  I can nap.

I can even watch TV shows above a G-rating…Or indulge in reality show marathons on my iPad!

But something else happens too.

In the land of the Beautiful People I desire to feel beautiful.  Suddenly I care about my wardrobe.  I want to take care of my skin.  I want to actually wear make-up.  I want to do something with this hair of mine, beyond my usual pony-tail.

It’s not that I become totally shallow and without spiritual depth.  I think it’s that I want to playI want to just be me—complex and multi-layered me. Not JUST a MOM.  Not JUST a home educator.  Not JUST a Christian woman.  Not JUST a homemaker.  I am proudly all of those things, but I am also so much more than that.

There is no ONE side of our personality.  We should each be unique and not easily defined.

What does it actually mean to be a homeschool mom?  Do I have to wear a blue jumper, Keds and make all of my children’s clothes?  What does it mean to be a mother of 5? Does it mean that I should no longer care about my appearance or want to feel attractive?  If I say I’m a Christian does that mean I should always be solemn and never laugh?  If I am married does that mean I can never spend the evening chatting with girlfriends or a week in another state sleeping in and spending time with girlfriends?

I am so blessed to have a husband that encourages me to reclaim joy, explore my interests, reconnect with friends and refuel my batteries.  He knows that it makes me a better (and happier) person, wife and mother.   He knows because like most men he has always operated this way.  Men know when they need to rest, and they do.  They know what they need to do to refuel, and they do.

Why did it take me so long to catch on?

Florida Winter Fashion

It was about 62 degrees for about an hour in Florida today so I wore this…

The boots are new and I totally love them. The horse was sold separately so I didn’t get it. I don’t think our HOA would approve anyway.

What do you think?

I watch reality tv for the fashion tips

I rarely watch TV, but when I do, I must confess I go through my TIVO’d episodes of The Real Housewives of Orange County (the original and best housewives in my opinion).

I recently joked on Facebook that I was watching The Real Housewives because I apparently don’t have enough reality in my life! The truth is, I like to watch the California fashions because these moms have not fallen into the sweatpants and ponytail funk that I frequently do.

On the final episode Alexis wore the most amazing dress from Tal Shayen (pictured below on right) and I am desperate to get it. I hope it comes with little black shorts to wear under it because it seems a bit short.

I see myself teaching math in this. If you saw my dream shoe, you would know how practical I am.

But seriously, not only is this dress fashionable and gorgeous, but I could even work it into our studies by letting the kids help me figure out how many more inches of fabric I need to sew on to the bottom so I could leave the house in this. I’m pretty sure you cannot sit down in this dress. But then that won’t be problem at my house because I feel like I never get to sit down as it is—I might as well look fashionable while I’m teaching!

I also want to know who does her hair and if they would be willing to fly to Florida and do mine for a week! A homeschool mom can dream, can’t she?

The ultimate homeschool shoe

May I introduce you to my fantasy shoe?

When I saw this shoe my heart skipped a beat and I started salivating on the computer screen. This shoe is so practical for a homeschool mother of 4 don’t you think?

Available from Valentino.
I wear a 10.5 in case you wanted to surprise me for Mother’s Day.
